Norwood Burman Tingler, 94, of Covington passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2015, at his son's residence in Clifton Forge. Mr. Tingler was born September 12, 1920, in Fincastle, a son of the late Elmer and Zella Wiley Tingler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife of 69 years, Dana Dressler Tingler in 2012, a son, Barry Tingler, a daughter, Beverly Tingler, a special friend, John Ayers, five brothers and three sisters. Around 1930, the family moved to the Dunlap Creek area and Norwood attended Dunlap schools. After high school, he worked for the B&D Railroad until he was inducted into the Army where he served under General Patton with the Army Corps of Engineers, European Division. Following his discharge from the Army, he worked at MeadWestvaco until his retirement in 1985. He was also a trustee for the labor union. He started coming to McAllister Presbyterian Church in 1948 and became a member in 1949. Norwood, Garland Altizer and Dr. Clark co-founded the Christmas Cheer Program using their own monies for this project until the church adopted it later. He was a member of the Session and Clerk; Board of Deacons, Chairman and Vice-Chairman; Chairman of the Sharing Fund; Sunday School Teacher; President of Men of the Church; member of choir; Chairman of Music Committee; VBS Teacher; Chairman of Service Committee; Pioneer Superintendent; Chairman of Youth Division; President of Men's Sunday School Class and Chairman of Stewardship Committee and Charter Member of Men of Missions. Norwood was a Life Member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as Chairman of the Fund Raising Committee for 8 years. He was Scoutmaster of Troop #31 for 13 years and an institutional representative for 20 years as liason to National Council of Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Covington School Board for 8 years and chairman for 2 years. Chairman of PTA for four years; member of the hospital commission for 4 years; member of National Polio Foundation for 2 years; Chairman and organizer of the Booster Club; Little League Coach fo r 3 years; worked with TAP and COPE; Publicity Chairman and Nominating Chairman; driver for patients to doctor appointments and cancer treatments to hospitals in Roanoke and Charlottesville; and worked weekly with the Meals On Wheels program. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law. He enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing on his property in Paint Bank. He leaves his family and friends with wonderful memories. Norwood's holy life is a rich legacy to his family and friends. The family joins him in expressing thanks and gratitude to all that supported him through the last four years and the friends too numerous to list who kept him in prayer. Known as "Paw Paw", he is survived by a Daughter, Dianne Mahan of Indianapolis, IN; a Son, Michael A. Tingler and his Wife, Joan, of Clifton Forge; a Daughter-in-law, Annette Tingler, of Culpepper; five grandchildren, Matthew Tingler, George Tingler and wife Crystal, and Bradley Tingler all of Culpepper, Jaclyn Tingler of Roanoke and Jonathan Tingler of Radford;four great grandchildren, Austin Tingler, Faith Tingler, Gia Tingler and Dru Tingler; his Sister, Louise Martin, of Pearisburg; a Brother-in-law, Louis Porretta of Warwick, RI; his special caregiver for the past four years, Mary Kay Nichols of Clifton Forge and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Monday morning at 11:00 AM at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael C. Fleenor officiating. Interment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post #1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Active pallbearers will be members of the Session of the church. The famiy will receive their friends Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the church.
