James Ernest Salyers, 62, of 2619 Dogwood Ave., died Monday January 30, 2017 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. He was born September 10, 1954 in Alleghany County, a son of the late William A. Salyers, Sr. and Yolanda Giardino Salyers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Dorothy S. Ayers. Jimmy was employed as a Commercial Tire Salesman by Blue Ridge Tire in Salem. He was an active member of Hoke Chapel Methodist Church, holding several offices over the years, including Chairman of the Administrative Board, Sunday School Superintendent and Pastor Parrish Relations. He was a coach of the girl's recreation league basketball and softball teams, as well as AAU basketball. He was an unofficial mentor to several area youth athletes, both boys and girls. Jimmy was a devoted, loving husband and father. He was an animal lover, especially dogs. Surviving are his wife of over 41 years, Donna Ayers Salyers of Covington; his daughter and son - in - law, Sammi Jo and Johnathan Lawrence of Richmond; two brothers, William A Salyers, Jr. and Garvis of Roanoke and Anthony E. Salyers and his wife Nancy of Covington; brothers-in-law, Thomas E. Ayers, Jr. and his wife Earleen of Knoxville, TN and David E. Ayers and Kathy Dudding of Clifton Forge; sister- in-law, Terry Brackman and her husband, James of Covington; his father-in-law, Thomas E. Ayers, Sr. and Barbara Entsminger of Covington; a number of nieces and nephews and his two grand dogs, Jackson and Gretchen. The funeral service will be held Saturday February 4, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Nancy Palmer officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lynn Wright. Interment will be follow in Hoke Chapel Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be William T. Matics, Robert W. Matics, Dustin S. Kidd, Nicholas T. Farmakis, Eddy Clemons and Brian Gingorich. Alternates will be Harlow Bowling, Leonard Smith, Paul M. Ayers and David J. Ayers. The family will receive their friends Friday evening from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM at the Arritt Funeral Home.
