William Robert Thompson, 74 years young, of 6301 Dunlap Creek Rd., passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. He was better known to his friends as "Bobby" or "Mr. T" He was born November 14, 1939, at Forest Hills in Summers County, West Virginia, a son of the late William Lee and Nellie Virginia Lowry Thompson . In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jackson "Jackie" Thompson and by a sister, Minnie McKinney. He married his high school sweet heart Hattie Cook on December 23, 1961. Bobby retired from the Carbon Department of MeadWestvaco in 1997 after 31 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and outdoor work. Following he and Hattie's moving to Covington in 1966, he became the neighborhood repairman, working on lawnmowers, weed eaters, chainsaws or anything someone brought him to fix. He loved to watch wrestling, Hee Haw, game shows and listening to Bluegrass music, but especially spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow. Bobby will be remembered for making others smile and laugh with his joke telling. Surviving are his Wife of 52 years, Hattie Cook Thompson, of Covington; three Sons, Eddie Thompson of Eastover, SC, Timmy Thompson and his Wife, Angie, and Alvin Thompson all of Covington; his Daughter, Melissa Humphries and her fianc , Larry Basham, of Covington; seven grandchildren, Anthony Thompson, Makala Humphries, Ariel Thompson, Walker Humphries, Faith Thompson, Destiny Thompson and Andrew Thompson; one Brother, John Thompson and his Wife, Melinda of The Villages, FL; three Sisters, Virginia Bittman of Detroit,MI, Mary Jones and her Husband, Glen, of Covington and Bernice Long and her Husband, Fairley, of Peterstown, WV; his Brother-in-law, Jimmy McKinney, and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Sunday at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with Frank Sizemore officiating. Interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park. The family will receive their friends Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at Arritt Funeral Home. The family suggests that donations in Mr. Thompson's name be made to the Moss Run Baptist Church; 105 Moss Run Road, Covington, VA 24426.
