Ben Cobbs was born October 17, 1946 in Covington, Virginia. He was the fourth of eight children born to George and Clara Barber Cobbs. Ben graduated from Watson High School in 1966. After high school he lived and worked in Newark, New Jersey. When his employer Savoy Records moved to Connecticut, Ben moved with the company to Connecticut. Ben later moved to Los Angeles, CA where he lived for several years. While in Los Angeles, he was a member of the choir at the church where the gospel legend; James Cleveland was pastor. Returning to the East Coast, Linden, NJ; Ben went into retail sales which he enjoyed. He remained active in his music, singing with his church choir and with other choirs. He later returned to Covington where he worked at Walmart and continued his ministry of music. Ben will be remembered lovingly by family, friends and community for his kindness, generosity, talent, and last but certainly not least, his fabulous sense of humor. He leaves to mourn: two sisters; Ola Wright, Ocala, FL, Zella Smith, Lithonia GA, ; three brothers; Samuel Cobbs, Stone Mt. GA, Donell Cobbs, Covington, and Darius Cobbs, Lithonia, GA; two sisters-in-law, Marjory Cobbs, Newark, NJ and Bennie Mae Cobbs, Stone Mt, GA, along with a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins. My heart goes out to the family. I had the wonderful opportunity of teaching Afton and her mother and father. Afton was a sweet young lady and always a joy with a smile on her face. I am so sorry for the whole family! Please accept my sympathy, to you all.
