Malkcom Coolidge Crawford World War II Veteran, Elder Emeritus, Westvaco Retiree Malkcom Coolidge Crawford, 97, of Covington, Virginia, passed away on October 17, 2022 at LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany in Low Moor Virginia after a short illness. 


Malkcom was born on December 19,1924 in New Castle, Virginia, a son of the late William H. Crawford and Alice Craft Crawford. Malkcom was a proud veteran of World War II. He served with the 5th Infantry Division, the third army as a Medic. He received a combat Medal Badge, 5 Major Campaign Stars and a Bronze Star. After his discharge from the Army, he joined the Virginia National Gard for several years. He was discharged from the Army on October 13, 1945, and went to work for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. (Westrock) on October 29, 1945. He worked in the boiler house 43 years before retiring in 1988. 


He loved hunting and fishing. 


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Surviving are his wife of 75 years, Bernice Hall Crawford; son, Steven R. Crawford and wife Kimmi of Covington; two grandchildren, Joseph A. Crawford (Jennie) of Fincastle and Amanda Hite (Kris) of Blacksburg; four great-grandchildren, Dax and Ledger Crawford and Atlas and Bennett Hite. Special thanks to his caregivers Crystal Rapp, Linda Wright and Ermine Meadows. 


A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday October 21, 2022, at Arritt Funeral Home Chapel, with the Reverend James MacDougall officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. 


Pallbearers will be Joey Crawford, Kris Hite, Gene Hinton, Don Hampton, Ben Marshall and Matt Marshall Honorary Pallbearers are James Jennings, Bill Dressler, Dewey May, Neil Dressler, Stephen Lopez and Michael Clyburn 


Interment will be at Alleghany Memorial Park with the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars holding Military Rites 


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in his memory, to Edgemont Presbyterian Church, 2306 South Church Avenue, Covington, VA 24426.
