William David Carter, 61, of 1239 W. Jackson St., died, Monday, February 15, 2021, at 300 East Gray St. Mr. Carter was born December 28, 1959, in Covington, a son of Helen Vass Carter of Covington and the late Bill Mack Carter. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Steve Smith and two nephews, Brian Smith and Michael Smith. He was the manager of the meat department at the Kroger in Daleville. He was a member of Grace Brethren Church. David was a Royal Arch Mason and a member of the Covington Masonic Lodge, No. 171 AF&AM, Past Patron of the Electa Chapter 33, Order of the Eastern Star of Roanoke. He loved to play golf, hunt, and spending time with his dogs. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 39 years Shanda DePriest Carter, of Covington; his Son, Ryan Carter and wife, Gabrielle of Midlothian, three aunts JoAnn Carter and Jean Elmore of Covington and Darlene Smith and husband, Gene, of Henrico; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Zandy DePriest and Susan of Woodstock and Randy DePriest and Kathy of Eagle Rock, and a number of nieces, nephews and one great nephew. In keeping with the current Covid-19 guidelines, you are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing at all times while attending the service. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the funeral home prior to the service to pay their respects. The funeral service will be held on Saturday February 20, 2021, at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Lynn Wright officiating. Rites for David will be presented by the Electa Ch. 33, Order of the Eastern Star and the Covington Masonic Lodge No. 171 AF&AM. The interment will follow at Sweet Chalybeate Cemetery. The family will receive their friends one hour prior to the service at Arritt Funeral Home on Saturday and at other times at his mothers' home at 300 E. Gray St. Pallbearers will be Bob Riggle, David Mays, Roy Kendrick, Zandy W. DePriest, Mark Smith, Gene Smith, Carter King, Paul Carter, Jarrett Wright, and James Jennings. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Harmon and Jesse Carter. The family suggests that memorial contributions in Mr. Carter's name be made to the Alleghany Humane Society; 9313 Rich Patch Road; Covington, VA 24426 or to the American Lung Association; 55 W.
