Richard Lee Akers, 88, of Covington passed away Friday, March 6, 2015 at the Veterans Care Center in Roanoke. He was born March 5, 1927 at Prudence, West Virginia in Fayette County, a son of the late John C. and Margie Ganoe Akers. In addition to his parents Mr. Akers was preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Walton, Lorene Taylor and Maxine Bennett. Mr. Akers served during World War II with the United Sates Navy. He retired in 1974 from the former Hercules, Inc. in Covington. Prior to moving to Covington he had been a coal miner in West Virginia. Mr. Akers was a Past Commander of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a Life Member of the Coleman Brinkley Post 4204 and he was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife Mildred Ellis Akers; one son, Rodger L. Akers and his wife Joan; one daughter, Jean A. Bartley and her husband Chuck; three grandchildren, Amanda B. Webb and her husband Eric; Jeremy C. Bartley and his wife Erin and John Rodger Akers and his wife Melissa; 7 great grandchildren; one brother, Emory Stanley and his wife Nikki; two sisters, Rose Metallo and Edna Andreas. The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Hollenbeck officiating, assisted by Emory "Buck" Stanley. The interment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery with Military Rites being conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorial donations in Mr. Akers' name may be made to a charity of your choice. The family will receive their friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Arritt Funeral Home and at other times at the residence at 1937 S. Byrd Ave, Covington, VA 24426.
