JOHN POSTEN John Herbert Posten, Sr., 90, died November 5, 2008, at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Fincastle. Mr. Posten was born October 15, 1918, in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, a son of the late Harry and Frances Posten. Following his graduation from North Carolina State University, Mr. Posten joined the United States Air Force and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in March of 1941. He was a pilot stationed at Nichols Field in the Philippines as part of the 17th Pursuit Squadron when World War II began. He was then assigned to Battaan and later continued flying in the Pacific Theatre from Darwin, Australia, and other points in the Pacific. He later rotated back to the United States and served as a flight instructor at various air bases, continuing after World War II ended and through the Korean War. Following the Korean War, he was reassigned to Germany where he served in military government. He retired in 1962 as a Lt. Colonel after 22 years with the United States Air Force. Mr. Posten was the former owner and operator of McDonalds Restaurant in Covington from 1976 until 1992. He was a member of Covington Baptist Church and the Covington Kiwanis Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Christian Posten in 2001; his son, John H. "Jack " Posten, Jr. in July of this year and also by two brothers. Surviving are his grandson, John H. Posten III of Fairfax; his granddaughter, Heather Hughes and her husband, Robert, of Henderson, NC; his daughter -in - law, Karen Posten of Fairfield; his neice, Linda Posten of Baltimore, MD. He is also remembered with love and will be sadly missed by his special caregivers and friends, Jan Armontrout of Covington and Tammy Cauvel of Clifton Forge. In keeping with his wishes, Mr. Posten's body has been cremated. The memorial service will be held Sunday November 9, 2008 at 2:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chris. Poluikis officiating, assisted by the Rev. Billy Price. Mr. Posten's ashes will be entombed with his wife's in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
