Sherman Nathaniel Holloway, Sr. departed this life for his eternal home on Thursday, May 7, at Lewis-Gale Alleghany Hospital. He was born in Covington, VA, the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Holloway and was a resident of Covington for most of his life. He was a graduate of the former Watson High School and attended Maryland Eastern Shore. He served in the U. S. Army with a tour in Vietnam. Sherman was a retired employee of Virginia (now Dominion) Power and also worked as the Thursday Night Supervisor for Covington High School. He loved all sports and was a loyal Pittsburg Steeler fan. His passion was for softball and he will be inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame in February 2016. Sherman was a member of the VFW Post 1033, where he served as post commander. He loved working with all of his fellow comrades providing services for veterans and their families. Sherman joined First Baptist Church at an early age and was later ordained as a deacon. He was a member of the Men's Fellowship organization and sang in the choir. He later joined Concerned Christian Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacon board, a member of the W.O. Hickman Choir, and a member of Men's Fellowship. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels; served as a bell-ringer for the Salvation Army; and helped provided church services at four nursing homes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Elizabeth Holloway and one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Ann Sharp. He is survived by his wife: Brenda M. Holloway; four daughters: Shanetta (Darin) Whorter of Atlanta, GA, Alexis (Rodney) Swanson and Matara (Marcus) of Williamsburg, VA and Reberta Beverley of Covington; two sons: L. Patrick Holloway (Wendi), Phoenix, AZ Sherman N. Holloway, Jr., Elkton, MD.; two grandchildren they raised: J. Malik and Asianna J. Holloway; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Lee Wayne (Evangeline) Holloway, Ronnie (Angie) Holloway; one sister, Connie (and partner J.C.); three aunts: Mrs. Evonne Laws (Anchorage), Mrs. Helen Holloway and Mrs. Eleanor Tyler of Covington; 6 sisters-in-laws: Gay Lynn (Gary)Twitty, Donna (George) Goodson, Cassandra Decohen, Linda Venable, Pamela (Charlie) Cannon, Gloria Pierce; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and three very special buddies: Gary Twitty, Garland Jefferson, and Timmy Yancey. The funeral service will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 1:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William O. Hickman officiating. The interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery with graveside rites being conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive their friends Monday evening from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM Monday evening at the Arritt Funeral Home.
