April 14, 2023

Edna Mae Barnett Craghead, aged 96, peacefully departed this earth April 14, 2023 at the home of her daughter in Verona, VA. She succumbed to pancreatic cancer along with other ailments which had afflicted her for many years.

Originally from Gretna, LA., she was the youngest of five children of Harry and Edna Barnett. She met, and eventually married, a sailor, Thomas James Craghead while his ship was ported in New Orleans. After he left the service, Edna lived with him as a pastor's wife in Riner, Va. until the family moved to Covington in 1964. There she worked as a bookkeeper at Covington Wholesale Grocery until she retired. She was widowed in 2007. Due to her health issues, she moved to Verona in 2016 to live with her daughter.

Mother of three, Edna lost her son, Thomas James Craghead, Jr.(Buddy) in the Vietnam war in 1968. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters and a brother. She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia van Werkhoven and Leigh Worley. She has six grandsons and one granddaughter: Christopher and wife Doris, Benjamin and wife Emily, Jonathon and Daniel Worley; Cory, Derek and Katrina van Werkhoven. There are three great grandchildren, Nicholas, Samantha and Hannah Worley, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She also had a special daughter, Ginger Lilly.

Edna enjoyed watching sports and was an avid fan of the New Orleans Saints. Quarterback Drew Bries made her day when he agreed to be photographed with her at a practice session in West Virginia. She maintained many friendships through social media and kept her mind sharp with IPAD apps and activities.

Edna was a member of the Grace Brethren Church in Covington and Women of Grace. She served her Lord and Savior devoutly in boundless ways, the first priority in her life. She was loved by many and will be missed. But we know she is happy to join God, her family and friends in her heavenly home; free of burdens, free of worries, free of pain at last.

Visitation will be at Arritt Funeral Home in Covington, VA on Friday at 1PM followed by a Celebration of her New Life at 2PM. Pallbearers will be Chris Worley, Ben Worley, Jonathon Worley, Daniel Worley, Cory van Werkhoven and Derek van Werkhoven.
