Harold Allen " Wimpy" Vanness, 78, of 441 E. Madison Street passed away on November 18, 2016, in Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital at Low Moor. He was a lifelong resident of Covington, born Oct. 30, 1938, to the late Wilson W. and Edith Dressler Vanness. He grew up hunting and fishing in the Alleghany area. Harold graduated from Covington High School in 1956. After attending Virginia Tech for one year, he and his high school sweetheart, Janice Wolfe, married in 1957. He graduated from The University of Richmond in 1961. Following two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Ga., Harold spent his thirty year career at Westvaco‘s Covington facility. Following his early retirement, he and Janice enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Janice Wolfe Vanness, in 2012, and his Brother Robert Stanley Vanness, who died in childhood. Surviving are three daughters, Kathryn Vanness and her Husband, Steve Cronemeyer, of Roanoke, Kammie V. Knabenshue and her Husband, Bob Knabenshue of Covington, and Anissa Kay Vess and Husband, Benjie Vess, of Berryville, VA, three grandsons, Allen Vanness "PJ" Knabenshue of Radford, Will Knabenshue and his wife Liz, of Whitesboro, TX,and daughter Emerson of Whitesboro, TX., and Dylan Wade Vess of Berryville, two great granddaughters, Emerson Knabenshue of Whitesboro, TX, and Amanda Whetsell and her husband, John, of Paragould, AK, one great great grandson, Rylee Whetsell of Paragould, AK. The funeral service will held Tuesday at 2:00 PM at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery with Judy Dotson officiating. Active pallbearers will by Bob Knabenshue, PJ Knabenshue, Benjie Vess, Dylan Vess, Steve Cronemeyer, Chuck Woodson, Mac Dale and Ed Gibson. The family will receive their friends for one hour before service time at Arritt Funeral Home. Following the service, the family invites friends to gather with them at his home, 441 E. Madison Street.
