Linda Carpenter Hippert, 82, of Covington, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Brian Center in Low Moor, Virginia.


Mrs. Hippert was born on June 23, 1940 in Highland County, Virginia. She was the oldest daughter of the late Lawrence Eugene and Mildred Taylor Carpenter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol Carpenter Lipes and Frances Carpenter Nicely.


Linda was a resident of Covington most of her life. She attended Covington High School and was of the Methodist faith. Linda was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and sister throughout her life. During early adulthood, she was known to many as “Speedy” while working as a waitress at several local eating establishments, including M.H. Fishman’s Company, Buddy and Sonny’s Drive-In and the Northside Restaurant in Covington. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and providing care for others. Over the years, Linda enjoyed roller-skating, cooking, collecting figurines and spending time with her family. She thoroughly enjoyed cats and the beauty of flowers.


Linda is survived by her husband Richie G. Hippert, Sr., whom she married on November 27, 1967. She is also survived by her children, Debra Markland of Pennsylvania, Tony Markland (Tina) of West Virginia, Shirley Hippert Thompson (Mark) of Covington and Richie Hippert, Jr. of Buena Vista. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Cynthia Nuckols and Robert Hippert (Teri) of Selma; her sister Gail Elson (Jeff) of Covington and brother Michael Carpenter (Hilda) of Maryland; grandchildren Tony Markland II, Jalen Hippert, Mya Hippert, Ashley Thompson, Cody Thompson, Molly O’Conner, Taylor Hippert and Jared Hippert; her special “sister” cousin Margaret Jackson of Covington, special sister-in-law Rachel Hippert of Salem, and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.


A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating, assisted by the Rev. Doug Hollenbeck.


Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. 


The family will receive friends on Friday, May 12, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Arritt Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Shirley and Mark Thompson, 1111 Dunbrack Road, Covington, VA 24426.


Pallbearers will be Tony Markland, Richie Hippert, Jr., Mark Thompson, Jr., Robert Hippert, Jalen Hippert, Cody Thompson, Troy Gillespie and James Smith.


Memorial contributions in Mrs. Hippert’s name can be made to the Boiling Springs Fire & Rescue Squad at 5407 Potts Creek Rd., Covington, VA 24426.
