Curtis William Stewart, age 76, died Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at the Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor after an extended illness.

Curtis was born, January 17, 1947, in Covington and was preceded in death by his father and mother, the late Dennie and Leatha Stewart; one son, the late William (Boo) Stewart; mother and father-in-law, the late Charles and Priscilla Twitty; sister and brother-in-law, the late Rhoda and Mike Lewis; brother-in-law, the late Tommy Sampson; and a nephew, the late Bryan Palmer.

Mr. Stewart worked at Hercules, Inc. until the plant closed because of a fire, C & O Railroad and was a maintenance employee at Covington High School. Curtis was happiest when he was listening to and playing music. He was fondly known in the Alleghany Highlands as the best D.J. around. In later years D.J. Curtis played faithfully for his church, Historic First Baptist Church and only stopped playing because his health wouldn’t allow him to continue playing the music.  He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan and enjoyed watching wrestling and baseball.

Surviving is his wife, Priscilla Twitty Stewart of Covington; a daughter, Charlesetta Spinner Davis of Covington; six sisters, Carolyn (James) Palmer of Indianapolis, Rev. Rosetta Stewart, Darlene Stewart, Cora (James) Poteat of Covington, Deborah Sampson of Clifton Forge, Denise Stewart Jackson of WVA.; three brothers, Leonard (Leah) Stewart of Maryland, James (Eleanor) Stewart of North Carolina, Thomas Dickerson, Jr. of Covington; one uncle, Rev. Charles R. (Sandra) Nowlin, Sr. of Indiana; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Stewart of Covington; seven grandchildren including Truman and Liam Stewart of Covington; three great grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Diana and Derlene Twitty of Covington; six brother-in-laws, Charles, Linwood, Steven (Elizabeth), Gary of Covington, Thomas of Ashburn, William (Winifred) Twitty of Richmond; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many very special dear friends.

A funeral service will be held on, Saturday, November 25, 2023 at twelve noon at the Historic First Baptist Church with Rev. Rosetta Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
