LA NELLE GRIFFITH LaNelle Porterfield Griffith, 88, of Covington died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in Alleghany Regional Hospital. Mrs. Griffith was born January 10, 1921, at Gap Mills in Monroe County, WV, a daughter of the late William Preston and Nina Young Porterfield. She was a school teacher for over 40 years, beginning in one room school houses in Monroe County and continuing at East Covington Elementary, Jeter Elementary and Jeter-Watson Elementary Schools in Covington. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Mrs. Griffith was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing her flowers with friends and neighbors by giving bulbs and plants to others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Wally Steele, a son-in-law, W.G.Steele, a daughter-in-law, Sandy Griffith, a sister, Phyllis Schrader and a sister-in-law, Juanita Porterfield. Surviving are her Husband of 67 years, Carl H. Griffith of Covington, three Daughters, Anne Steele of Bristol, VA, Janet Wolfe and her husband, Donnie, and Nanci Scruggs and her husband, Gary, all of Covington; one Son, Bill Griffith of Johnson City, TN; seven grandchildren. Mandi and Mark Dennis, Millie Anne and Brent VanDevender, Ryan and Brandi Wolfe, Adam and Wendy Wolfe, Justin and Krista Scruggs, Casey Scruggs and Jenn Glenny, and Emmalea Griffith; nine great grandchildren, Ellie Dennis, Sam Dennis, Gabby Dennis, Maddox Wolfe, Gage Wolfe, Keller Wolfe, Boston Wolfe, Abe VanDevender and Cole Scruggs; two brothers, Alvin Porterfield and his wife, Eleanor, of Lewisburg, WV , and Kendall Porterfield of Gap Mills, WV, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Friday evening at 6:00 PM at Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Price officiating assisted by the Rev. John Burnham. Following the service the family will receive their friends at the church and at other tiems will be at the residences of Donnie and Janet Wolfe at 1205 Iroquois Place or Gary and Nancy Scruggs at 813 Potts Creek Road. A Committal Service will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 AM at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery Arritt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
