Janine Antionette McClure (Johnson), 62, formerly of Covington, passed away in the
comfort of her home in Washington, D.C., on February 5, 2026.
She was born on March 23, 1963, in Covington, VA. She was preceded in death by
her parents, Shirley Umbles and James Tolliver Johnson Sr.; her beloved sister, Deidre
Johnson; her aunts, Regina Mae Johnson (Hunter) and Doris Goode (Umbles); her
uncle, William “Winky” Melvin Johnson; and her late husband, Cecil McClure.
Janine was a radiant light in the lives of all who knew her. She was cherished for her
joyful spirit, her genuine honesty, and the way her beautiful smile could brighten any
room the moment she entered. Above all, she found her greatest happiness in being
surrounded by family, treasuring every moment spent reminiscing and simply enjoying
one another’s presence. From her contagious laugh to her vibrant personality, Janine’s
life was a testament to love, laughter, resilience, and quiet beauty — teaching those
around her to find joy in the little things, to cherish family, and to live with an open heart.
Like the butterflies she adored, her spirit was gentle, colorful, and free, leaving behind a
legacy that will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Janine leaves behind her loving son, Cecil Ross, who was the center of her world and
her greatest pride and joy; and her cherished grandchildren, K’Jai, Ryleigh, and Tru,
who brought immense happiness to her life. She is also survived by Bernedia Minor,
a beloved mother‑figure and lifelong source of love and support.
She is lovingly remembered by her siblings: David Ross, Felicia Johnson, James
Tolliver Johnson Jr., Jennifer Cobb, Kennithia Johnson, Michelle Johnson, Norell
Yancey, Terrence Johnson, Anthony Johnson, and Tyrone Hill, along with a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who were touched by her
kindness, humor, and vibrant spirit.
Janine loved her family deeply and fiercely. The memories she created — from
childhood adventures to her signature “Smoochiis,” her outings to ‘The Wharf’ for fresh
seafood, her unique sense of style, and her special nickname “Stella Boo” for Meme —
will forever bring comfort and smiles to those who loved her.
A family organized memorial service will be held at Pine Street Baptist Church in
