George Washington Halsey, Sr., 91, of 213 E. Pine Street, died, Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. He was born April 18, 1925 in Covington, a son of the late Thomas and Marie Barnett Halsey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Marcus Halsey, in 2013 and also by ten brothers and sisters. Mr. Halsey served his country with the United States Army during World War II. He was the founder and operator of Halsey's Repair Shop from the mid 1960's until his retirement in 1991. Following his retirement, he continued to help his son in the shop on Lexington Street. Surviving are his wife of over 60 years, Virginia Crawford Halsey, of Covington; three sons, Rev. David Halsey and his wife, Billiejo, of Clifton Forge; Larry Halsey and George Halsey, Jr. and his wife, Clarice, all of Covington; two daughters, Denise Young and her husband, William, of Blacksburg and Nicole Fenderson and her husband, Robert, of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Saturday November 5, 2016, at 12:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Halsey officiating. The entombment will follow in the Alleghany Memorial Park Mausoleum with military rites being conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
