JoAnn Carter of Covington VA passed away at home on March 30, 2023, after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Kathleen “Peggy” Worsham and David Mustoe Carter.
She retired from the Alleghany Highlands School system after many years as a physical education and driver’s education teacher. After retirement she continued to be an avid supporter of youth sports and assisted with ticket sales for sporting events at the high school. She was inducted into the Alleghany Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007 and recognized with a Distinguished Service Award in 1983 for twenty years of teaching prior to Alleghany County Schools merger with Clifton Forge. An education award she received in 1991 was inscribed with “JoAnn will be remembered for her interest in fair play and oneness in life. Her boundless energy has been expressed through her cheerful disposition which she has freely shared with everyone.” She appreciated the many students who continued to bring her delight over the years with their cards, calls, and visits.
JoAnn was a member of South Covington United Methodist Church and donated her time to several charitable organizations as well as providing assistance to numerous family members, neighbors, and friends. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her cousins on both sides of her family. She was an active member of the Dunlap High School Reunion Committee and several Education Associations.
Family who will cherish her memory are her niece and caregiver, Shanda DePriest Carter, great-nephew, Ryan Carter and wife, Gabrielle of Midlothian, great-great nephew, Rhett Carter, cousin and caregiver, Michele Clifford Wright (Lynn), sister-in-law, Helen Carter, cousin, Linda Simmons (Rob), and many close friends and extended family.
Miss Carter was preceded in death by her sister, Sandra Cook in 2003, brother Bob Carter in 1996, brother, Bill Mack Carter in 2016, nephew, David Carter in 2021 and brother-in-law, Pat Cook in 1998.
The family expresses gratitude to Connections Plus Healthcare + Hospice formerly Mountain Regional Hospice for their loving and expert care, Mary Holcomb and to Tommy Alfred for his assistance over the years.
The celebration of life will be Saturday, 04/01/2023 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Lynn Wright officiating. Visitation will be before the service from 1:00 PM until service time. Interment will be made in the Sweet Chalybeate Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ryan Carter, Jarret Wright, Patrick Carter, Randy Scott, Ronnie Spellman, and Sam Arrington.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Harmon, Jessee Carter, Danny Warlitner, and Rodney Baker.
The family suggests memorial contributions in Miss Carter's name be made to South Covington United Methodist Church 1911 S. Kadel Ave. Covington VA 24426, Connections Plus Healthcare + Hospice Volunteers 537 Main St Clifton Forge VA 24422 or the Alleghany Athletic Association.
Arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home.
