Sue “Tootsie” Baker Byers, 91, of Covington, Virginia, sadly left us on September 1, 2022. She was able to say goodbye to her family and loved ones before passing peacefully.
She was born June 9, 1931, at the family home in Covington, Virginia, the daughter of Lucille Knighton Baker.
Sue is survived by her first cousins Carroll Smith, Gordon Shoemaker, Robert Knighton, Nancy Simmons, Susan Curtis, Vicki Callear, Bert Knighton, and many loving family members and friends including her Yorkshire Terrier, Lucie.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Byers, and their son, Richard Byers.
Sue worked as a bank teller with the First National Exchange Bank, then with Wachovia Bank.
Sue was a member of Mallow Presbyterian Church, where she was highly involved with the congregation. She was a children’s Sunday school teacher, a choir member, a President of the Presbyterian Women, a Bible Moderator of the Women’s Circle, and a mentor to many members of the Mallow congregation, sharing her kind heart and friendly smile with everybody.
Sue and Bill were original season ticket holders for the Covington Astros (minor league baseball) and they enjoyed going to most, if not all, of their home games in Covington. She loved working alongside her mother with the canning, freezing, and shelling of vegetables from the garden. In her younger days, she enjoyed living in Virginia Beach with the family of her aunt, Claudine Shoemaker.
She recently moved to senior living at the Commonwealth in Norfolk, Virginia. Although her time there was brief, she quickly made wonderful friends and radiated a positive and happy attitude at every moment. She was renowned for her daily (FAST) walks around the building and for participating in EVERY activity offered.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 2 p.m., at Mallow Presbyterian Church in Covington Virginia, with the Rev. Gary Marshall officiating. Her cremains will be interred with her mother, Lucille Knighton Baker, at Cedar Hill Cemetery after the memorial service. A reception will be held at Mallow Presbyterian Church after all ceremonies.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made in Mrs. Byers' name to the Mallow Presbyterian Church, 2004 Mallow Road, Covington, VA 24426.
