Arnold Lawrence

James Arnold Givens, 88, formerly of Covington, died, Tuesday August 19, 2014 at Mechanicsville. He was born March 1, 1929 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, a son of the late Lawrence and Sara Mars Givens. Mr. Givens retired as a truck driver with VDOT. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lucille Wright Given's in 2006; two daughters, Cathy Dunkum and Doris Gail Givens; a grandson, Aaron Chandler and also by one brother and one sister. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Washington of Aylett and Frances Smith and her husband James all of New Kent; two sons, James Gives, Jr. of Richmond and Shawn Givens of Reidsville; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Some people only dream of angels, we held one in our arms! God welcomed Haley Grace Nida into his loving kingdom on August 17, 2014. She was born August 2, 2014, a beautiful black haired blue eyed angel weighing 2 pounds and 8 ounces and measuring 13 inches long. We may never understand why things like this happen, but we must simply trust God's will. Haley is survived by her parents, John L. Roy North "Buck" Burks, Jr., 73, of 104 Walton Church Lane, Clifton Forge, went home to be with the Lord , Thursday, August 7, 2014 . He was born July 22, 1941 in Lynchburg, a son of the late Roy N. Burks, Sr. and Pearl Robertson Burks. Mr. Burks retired from CSX in 2003 as a Clerk after 42 years of service. He enjoyed singing with the gospel group The Expressions for 24 years and also was a member of The Servants for 15 years. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Brenda Campbell Burks of Clifton Forge; one daughter Renae Grimes and Michael Grimes of Clifton Forge; three brothers, Leonard Watts Burks of Blue Ridge ; Jerry Burks and his wife Dee of Fincastle and Bruce Burks and his wife, Andi of Vemon, VT ; one sister Dreama Jackling of Norfolk ; a sister - in-law, Angie Cash and her husband Steve of Roanoke and several nieces and nephews, including great grand nieces and nephews. Marie Hepler Crizer, 92, of 1322 S. David Street died Monday, August 4, 2014, at her home. Mrs. Crizer was born December 25, 1921, in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Baxter and Nannie Baker Hepler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven sisters and brothers. She was a longtime member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her Husband, Paul L. Crizer, Sr., of Covington; one Son and Daughter-in-law, Paul L. Jr. and Dawn Crizer, of Covington and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM at the graveside in Alleghany Memorial Park with the Rev. Timothy Edward Austin, 58, of 2305 S. Lewis Ave. died Friday, August 1, 2014, at his home. Mr. Austin was born May 16, 1956, in Covington a son of Edward Austin of Covington and Joanne Myers Austin of Covington. He was a retired crane operator with Local 147 , Operating/Engineering Union. Tim was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing for all of his life. Surviving in addition to his parents are his Wife, Diana Fox Austin of Covington; his Daughter, Kayla Maynard, of Covington; his Step Mother, Janet Austin of Covington; his Aunt, Mary Austin, of Covington and his beloved Beagle, Duke. Charles Lacy Walton, Jr., 74, of 7408 Tucker Road, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at his residence. He was born February 3, 1940 at Wytheville, a son of the late Charles L. Walton, Sr. and Jessie Shue Walton. Mr. Walton retired from the Alleghany County Public Works in the Sanitation Department. Hallie Marie Stull Rose, 95, of Covington ,went peacefully to her heavenly home on Sunday, July 27, 2014. She was the born April 27, 1919 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Ralph and Cora Bush Stull. Mrs. Rose a devoted Mother and Grandmother. She always enjoyed cooking and loved feeding her family and friends. She was a long time member of Persinger United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley J. Rose in 1994; a daughter, Beverly J. Sampson and son-in-law, Robert B. Mary Marshall Martin Arritt, 88, formerly of Covington, died, Monday, July 21, 2014 in Forest, VA. Mrs. Arritt was born June 11, 1926 in Paint Bank, VA, a daughter of the late Fred and Willie Garten Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband H. Lee Arritt Sr. in 1994 two sons Jeffrey Carl Arritt in 1966 and Fred Calvin Arritt in 1986, three brothers Hampton Martin, Haynes Martin, and James Fisher. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church of Covington. Margie Wolfe Tucker, 94, died Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Low Moor. She was a former resident of Ben's Run Road. Mrs. Tucker was born April 12, 1920, at Princeton, WV, a daughter of the late Jacob Hezekiah and Virgie Fridley Wolfe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Kermit R. Tucker, in 1995 and also by one sister, Clara Dawson, and four brothers, Robert Wolfe, Jesse Wolfe, Meldon Wolfe and Seldon "Pat" Wolfe. She had retired from the former Halmode Sewing Plant in Covington and was a cafeteria worker at the former Boiling Springs Elementary School. Margie was a longtime member of Highland Chapel Christian Church. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. The graveside service will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 PM in Lone Star Cemtery with the Rev. J. B. Broughman officiating. Interment will follow. Mrs. Childs was born November 14, 1920 in Botetourt County the daughter of the late Robert and Pearl Young Scott. She was also preceded in death by her husband Daniel L. Childs in 2005, three sons Linwood Childs, Dewey Childs, and Dallas Claytor, three brothers, and 1 sister. She was a former owner of the Childs Jewelry Store in Covington and was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church. James Brisco Forbes, 89, of 115 Friels Dr. died Friday June 27, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Forbes was born in Rockbridge County the son of the late Jesse and Ida May Plott Forbes. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Wilma Gann Forbes as well as his second wife Mary Fogus Carper Forbes, one daughter Susie Forbes, one sister Virginia Bayne, three brother Charles Forbes, Eugene Forbes, and Russell Forbes, and one granddaughter Nita Bell Forbes. James retired in 1983 after 43 years of service to MeadWestvaco in the Wood Department. Mr. Forbes was also involved with the LOA. He was a very avid outdoorsman and gardener in his spare time.
