George Sherman Damron, 59, of 1312 S. Dalton Avenue died Monday, November 9, 2020, at his home. Mr. Damron was born June 12, 1961, in Jacksonville, Florida, a son of the late Paul Damron, Sr., and Helen Hess Damron. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant grandson, James Tinsley. He was employed as a truck driver for T&L Trucking of Center, Alabama. Surviving are two Daughters and Sons-in-law, Suzanne and Roger Horn of Covington and Latisha and Matthew Tinsley of Gadsden, AL; seven grandchildren; one Brother, Paul Damron, Jr., of Jacksonville,FL; one Sister, Debbie Villinski, of Lafayette, IN. and two nieces. In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial Service will be held at a later date....

Mary Blakeslee Nettleton Chase, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 9, 2020, in Roanoke, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Carrie Nettleton; her sister, Carolyn B. Nettleton, and her beloved Husband, Allan S. Chase. Blakeslee was born March 2, 1928, in Richmond, VA, where she enjoyed a happy childhood at the family home, Carolton on the Hill. At the age of 13 she began education at Stuart Hall boarding school in Staunton, Virginia. After graduation from Stuart Hall, she attended H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College at Tulane University earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Following college she attended the Arts Student League in New York City and went to work at Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C. In the fall of 1954, Blakeslee went to the University of Georgia to study at the Department of Landscape and Architecture, earning her Masters Degree in Landscape and Architecture in 1958. Phyllis Stull Cook, 73, of 3404 Jamison Mountain Road, died November 9, 2020, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor. Mrs. Cook was born January 2, 1947, in Washington, DC, a Daughter of the late Paul Stull and Rosa Howard "Peggy" Stull. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Charles Cook in 2007. Surviving are her Son, Charles "Chip" Cook, of Covington; her friend, Cary Shultzabeger and her Brother, Harold Stull, of Kensington, MD. In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated. Lillian Otelie Mattson Pyne, 88, of 1000 Fairview Ave., died, Sunday November 8, 2020 at Lewis Gale Alleghany in Low Moor. Ms. Pyne was born June 5, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY a daughter of the late Albert and Edvarda Biland Mattson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband John P. Flynn Jr., two sisters Clara Jacobsen and Edith Terry. Lillian worked in Medical Transcription for Alleghany Regional Hospital and was a member of Parrish Court United Methodist Church. Surviving are three daughters and son in laws; Kathleen Beveridge and Gary, of Roanoke, Eleanor Wood and George and Theresa Harrison and Billy all of Covington, a son Timothy Pyne of Roanoke, five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. A private service will be held Friday November 13, 2020. The interment will be held in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home. Brenda Wright Talley, 70, of 9613 Thacker Lane, Richmond, died Saturday, November 7, 2020, at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond. Mrs. Talley was born November 29, 1949, in Covington a daughter of the late Lawrence and Helen Tucker Wright. She was a retired employee of Suntrust Bank in Richmond. Surviving are her Husband, Donald Talley, of Richmond; two Daughters, Deborah Talley and her husband William of Aylett and Gail Talley and her husband Mark of Richmond; four grandchildren, Tyler Ancarrow, Alex Ancarrow and Stewart Ancarrow, all of Richmond and Lauren West of Aylett; three Brothers and Sisters-in-law, Larry and Cindy Wright and Lewis and Betty Wright, all of Covington and Wayne and Patti Wright of Hanover and several nieces and nephews. Janet LaRue Brant Claytor, 81, formerly of Covington, died, Friday November 6, 2020 in the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center. Mrs. Claytor was born August 1, 1939 in Ronceverte, WV a daughter of the late Joseph L. Brant and Beulah Persinger Brant Anderson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Robert "Bob" L. Claytor in 2002, two brothers and sisters in law; William "Bill" Brant and Frieda and Bud Brant and Charlotte, two sisters; Louise Brant and Ruth A. Bannister and husband Duke. Janet was a retired manager of the Clearview Town Homes as well as a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Loyal Order of the Women of the Moose. Billy Grey Depriest, Sr., 65, of 341 Grande St., died Monday, November 2, 2020, at his residence. Mr. Depriest was born January 31, 1955, in Alleghany County a son of the late Ira T. Sr. and Pauline Rogers Depriest. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Ira Depriest Jr. Billy was an independent logger and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. In his spare time, he loved to go coon and deer hunting as well as loved horses, the Dallas Cowboys, watching wrestling, and playing cards. He was a family man loved his grandkids and spending time with them at holidays. Virgie McDaniel Martin, 86, formerly of Covington, died, Sunday November 1, 2020 at the Alleghany Health and Rehab in Clifton Forge. Mrs. Martin was born December 31, 1933 in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Edgar and Nannie Lou Howard McDaniel. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter Shirley Harris, a son Bill Bob Martin, a grandson Michael Harris, five sisters, and one brother. Surviving are a daughter Paula G. Brady, a son Randy Martin, a sister Pearl Wright all of Covington 15 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, special friends Lonnie Rider, Max Humphreys, Shirley Lamb, Jeff Lamb, and Melinda Hammer all of Covington. Julian Ray Shaffier, 85, of Warm Springs died Sunday, November 1, 2020, at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV. Mr. Shaffier was born September 9, 1935, in Bath County a son of the late James Oscar Shaffier and Lucy Margaret Hise Shaffier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. He was the retired Service Manager of the Covington Ford dealership and a member of Life Line Ministries Church. He was a member the Senior Golf Group at Cliffview Golf Course and loved to watch football.
