Thelma Woolfolk Halsey, 74, of 1017 Lincoln Avenue died Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at the Brian Center Nursing Home in LowMoor. Mrs. Halsey was born March 21, 1942, in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Lawrence W. Woolfolk and Hazel Church Woolfolk Childress. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Emmanuel Halsey, Sr. in 1968, a granddaughter, Cheryl Janee Parris, in 2013, and her special friend, Milton Helton, Sr. Mrs. Halsey had attended the former Jeter Watson High School. She had retired from the Covington School Board after many years as a custodial engineer at Covington High School. She was a longtime member of Pine Street Baptist Church where she had served as a Loyal Daughter of the church and as an Usher. Melvin Douglas Wright, 61, of Covington and formerly of Washington, DC, died Monday December 26, 2016 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem. He was born November 2, 1955 in Bath County, a son of Genevieve Wright McKenzie of Macon, GA and the late James Kein. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his step father Lloyd McKenzie; a sister Demeritry Valdez ;grandparents, Eugene and Emma Wright; uncle Tyrone Wright and a cousin Kevin Wright. Melvin was a graduate of Valley High School in Bath County. He was a former cook at Red Lobster and was member of Temple Church of God In Christ in Washington, DC. He loved to cook, was a pet lover, a great dancer, loved to watch basketball and football games and read the newspaper from front to back. Carrie Switzer Crawford, 38, of 620 East Kline Street died Monday, December 26, 2016. She was born April 12, 1978, in Alleghany County a daughter of Johnny Switzer of Covington and Linda Woods Taylor of Glasgow. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her Husband, Billy Crawford of Covington; two Sons, John Woods and William Crawford, both of Covington; one Daughter, Mia Crawford of Covington; five Sisters, Jenny Woods and Clarence "Joe" Floyd of Buena Vista, Stephanie and Lewis Humphries of Low Moor, Mary Engle, Rosalite Bland and Betty Switzer all of Glasgow; one Brother, Jonathan Switzer of Richmond and a number of nieces and nephews. Winfed Basil McElwee, 92, of 2907 Sam Snead Highway in Hot Springs died Sunday, December 25, 2016, at the Woodlands Nursing Home in Clifton Forge. Mr. McElwee was born May 16, 1924, in Hot Springs a son of the late Ollie and Lora Bell Perry McElwee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Monna Burns McElwee, in 2005, and also by two brothers, Gratton McElwee and Welford McElwee, and four sisters, Sadie Lee Burns, Emma Lois Burns, Mildred Lowry and Maxine Shinault. He was a veteran of World War II with the U.S.Navy . He had retired in as a carpenter after years at The Homestead in Hot Springs. He was a longtime member of the Hot Springs Presbyterian Church and the Hot Springs Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Helen Drummond Hutton, 92, of Covington, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 10, 2016. She was born on September 1, 1924, in Monroe County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Roy Raymond and Leona Pearl Dudding Drummond. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Griffin Hutton, in 1979, her brothers and sisters Harley, Tom, Bob and Douglas Drummond, Dorothy Armentrout, and Lessie Smith. Helen was a Graduate of Dunlap High School and Cornett School of Business. She was employed by Lewis Gale Hospital-Alleghany. She is survived by her sisters, Rossie Kelly, Lucy Godby, Ruth Hammer, and Mary Carol Horner. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, her special friends in the Bartley and Green families and all the special children she cared for throughout her life. Michael Wayne Treynor, 74, of 3609 Midland Trail, died, Wednesday, December 07, 2016 at his residence. He was born August 20, 1942 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Emmett and Violet Arrington Treynor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Jeanette Treynor, in 2015. Mr. Treynor served his country with the National Guard. He retired from Hercules/AET. Inc. as machine operator after 30 plus years of service. Bill Mack Carter, 84, of 300 East Gray Street died Saturday, December 3, 2016, in Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital. Mr. Carter was born March 27, 1932, in Alleghany County a son of the late Mustoe and Kathleen Worsham Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a Daughter, Lynn Ellen Smith, a Grandson, Brian Smith, a Brother, Bob E. Carter, a Sister, Sandra Cook and a Brother-in-law, Pat Cook. Bill Mack had retired in 1993 as a Conductor after 40 years with the CSX Railroad. He was a member of the Iron Hill Christian Church. He was an avid lover and player of country music and loved being around family, friends and celebrations. CARL SLAUGHTER Our beloved Father and "Pop Pop", Carl Gene Slaughter went to be with his Eternal Heavenly father on November 29, 2016 after a sudden illness. He was a longtime resident of Brentwood, with his most recent home at the Brian Center in Low Moor for many years. He was loved by many and never met a stranger. He was always helping others in need, providing food through the Church Food Bank or making sure that others at the nursing home were well cared for and happy. He was a longtime and dedicated fan of the Washington Redskins and Virginia Cavaliers. He was born in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, on August 31, 1941 and was a graduate of Fayetteville High School. He joined the United States Navy and was stationed on the USS Coral Sea, aircraft carrier. He was a former employee of Hercules, Inc. and AET. Leonard Boyd "Lenny"Hodges, 65, of 237 E. Pennsylvania Ave., died, Monday, November 28, 2016 at his residence. He was born September 14, 1951 in Covington, a son of the late James Hodges, Sr. and Melba Tucker Hodges. Mr. Hodges was a retired School Teacher with the Alleghany County Public School System. His passions were playing golf and traveling on his motorcycle. Surviving are his brother, James Hodges, Jr. of Earlysville; one nephew, James Hodges III and his wife Christine of Covington; two great nieces Cora Hodges and Amelia Hodges and one great nephew James Hodges IV all of Covington. Lillie Persinger Jamison of 3300 Jamison Mountain, died Thursday November 24, 2016 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital on Low Moor. She was born in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late George Lee Persinger and Melissa Susan Persinger Persinger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis L. Jamison, in 2002, a grandson Charles "Curt" Jamison in 1987, a son-in-law, Jerry Wolfe, in 2003 and 8 sisters and 3 brothers. Mrs. Jamison was life long member of Cliffdale Christian Church where she was the Ladies Sunday School teacher for many years and loved singing in the choir.
