Alfred Lee Helton, 82, of 121 S. Alleghany Ave., died, Friday October 28, 2016, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born July 17, 1934, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Robert D. and Mary Pollard Helton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Glendell Wallace Helton, in 2014; two brothers, Joseph Helton and Milton Helton and a sister, Fannie Wright. Mr. Helton Served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was an employee of the former Hercules, Inc. and retired from AET in the Shipping Department after over 40 years with the companies. He was a member of Pine Street Baptist Church where has served as usher, member of the church choir, Trustee of the Church, Member of the Men's Fellowship Class and was recently honored as an Emeritus Member of the Church. Allen Dale Lowry, Sr., 59 of 1510 Dunbrack Road died Thursday, October 27, 2016, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital. He was born August 27, 1957, a son of the late Quentin and Mildred McElwee Lowry. In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Lowry. Dale was employed as an HVAC Supervisor with Mountain Air Inc. and had been with the company for 40 years. He attended Greenwood Presbyterian Church. Dale was a member and former officer of the Falling Spring Fire Department. For many years he was active in the Covington Little League Baseball, servicing as a coach and as an officer. He was an avid outdoorsman. Richard Palmer Lodge, 56, of 1214 Hillcrest Drive, died, Wednesday October 26, 2016. He was born April 29, 1960, a son of the late Russel and Clara Weese Lodge. Richard was employed by Duke Power in South Carolina as a Carpenter. He was a huge car enthusiast for all of his life. Surviving are his three brothers, Gary Lodge and his wife Karen; Gene Lodge and Michael Lodge all of Covington; his Aunt Phyllis Givens and her husband Loyd of Covington; nieces and nephews, Katreena Burger; Allen Lodge; Matthew Lodge and Holly Achey; great nieces and nephews, Brandon Lodge; Abby Lodge; Allie Lodge and Mila Lodge; friends Jim and Betty Linkenhoker of Covington and Wendell Hammond of Florida. Rose Marie Haymaker Gibson, 69, of Detroit Street, died Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. She was born April 25, 1947 in Springwood, Virginia, a daughter of the late Warren Justin Haymaker and Gladys Elizabeth Hudson Haymaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers; two sisters and a granddaughter, Elaina Hayslett. Rose was a graduate of James River High School. She was an employee of the former Hercules, Inc. for 5 years. For 19 years she was employed by PMI/Stop In Food Stores and was recognized in the Who's Who's Managerial Excellence. She was a member of the Covington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Rose loved to garden and take care her animals and spend time with her family at the camp. Paul Eugene "Gene" Kemper, 87, of 2042 S. Carpenter Dr., went to be with the Lord on October 19, 2016. Mr. Kemper was born March 23, 1929 the son of the late Lewis E. Kemper and Myrtle Dew Kemper. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two Sisters Wanda K. Hepler and Maxine Byer and two Brothers Joseph Kemper and Richard Kemper. He retired at 46 years of service with MeadWestvaco and was a member of the Curtis A. Smith Veterans of Foreign War Post 1033. Shirley Ford Vint, 76, of Covington went peaceably home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday October 17, 2016. She was born March 26, 1940 in Covington, a daughter of the late Raymond and Mary Meadows Ford. Shirley was formerly employed by Alleghany Regional Hospital as a Nursing Assistant and was also an employee of the former Halmode, Inc. in Covington. Surviving are her daughter, Donna Vint of Covington; three sisters, Rosa Ford of Covington; Catherine Dudley and Dee Barnhart and her Don, all of Barberton, Ohio; one brother, Bill Ford and his wife Leigh of Covington and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Thursday, October 20, 20016 at 11:00 Am from the graveside in Alleghany Memorial Park with the Rev. Charles Russell officiating. The family will receive their Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 PM at the Arritt Funeral Home.

Barbara Clemons Jones, 84, of Clifton Woods Apartments, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Brian Center in Low Moor. Barbara was born November 27, 1931 in Ronceverte, WV. Barbara was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She worked with seniors at the League of Older Americans until her retirement. Barbara is proceeded in death by her mother, Loretta C. Ayres, brother Jimmy Clemons, sister Patricia Buttner, and granddaughter Taylor Jones. She is survived by her three children, Loretta Orsi of Covington, VA, Michael Jones and girlfriend Delia Ward of Hustonville, KY, and John Jones of Covington, VA. She is also survived by four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, Bree & Erik Emurian and their two children, Michael Clark and his three children, David Jones, and Scott Jones. Dorothy Jane Hinton Alfred, 93, formerly of Covington, died, Saturday, October 15, 2016 at The Woodlands Nursing Center in Clifton Forge. She was born June 18, 1923, the daughter of the late George M. Hinton, Sr. and Gussie Dressler Hinton. In addition to her parents she was preceded by a brother, George M. Hinton, Jr. and also by two sisters, Pauline H. Owens and Aurelia H. Flint. Surviving are her son Dan Alfred of New York, NY; one granddaughter Jessica Alfred and one grandson Tim Alfred; several nieces and nephews, including James and Barbara Flint who were her care givers for a number of years and Edward Flint and Gary Flint. In keeping with her wishes her body has been cremated. There will be no formal funeral service or visitation, per her request....

Bertie Cline Givens, 93, of 516 E. Kline Street, died, Wednesday October 12, 2016 at her residence. She was born May 21, 1923 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Joe and Bertha Cline. In addition to her parents she was preceded in the death by her husband Samuel T. Givens, Sr. in 1979; two daughters, Ruby Weese and JoAnn Gibson; a grandson, Josh Wells and five sisters and two brothers. Mrs. Givens was employed by the former K-Mart in Covington for a number of years. She was a member of Solid Rock Ministries that she loved dearly and had served as the Church Secretary for over 40 years. She loved shopping and taking family trips. Nellie Bailey Baker, 46, of 251 Clydes Run, Eagle Rock, died, Tuesday October 4, 2016 in Covington. She was born June 14, 1970 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Alfred Bailey and Naomi Switzer Taylor. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnietta Jean Beverly in January 2016 and a brother, Jumbo Bailey. Surviving are her two daughters, Annie DePriest and her husband Roger and Brittney Forbes, both of Covington; two sons, Johnny "J.J." Childress and William Austin Childress both of Covington; four grandchildren and her fiance, Roy "Dave" Patterson of Eagle Rock. In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated. The funeral service will be held Friday, October 14, 2016 at 1:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Doug Moore officiating. The interment will be made in Lone Star Cemetery. The family will receive their friends one hour prior to service time on Friday at Arritt Funeral Home.

Carrol Eugene "Gene" Humphries, 86, of 5305 Rich patch Rd., died Sunday, September 25, 2016 at his residence. He was born May 15, 1930 in Rich Patch in Alleghany County, a son of the late Albert L. and Elsie Bush Humphries. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Eilene Andrews. Gene served his country during the Korean War with the United States Navy. He was awarded the China Service Medal, national Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (4 Stars), The United Sates Nations Service Medal and the 50 year Service Medal. He served on the USS Perkins Ship. He was a life member of Mountain Valley United Methodist Church in Rich Patch, also he served as Scout Master with the Boys Scouts of America for number years.
