Allen

Harold Allen " Wimpy" Vanness, 78, of 441 E. Madison Street passed away on November 18, 2016, in Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital at Low Moor. He was a lifelong resident of Covington, born Oct. 30, 1938, to the late Wilson W. and Edith Dressler Vanness. He grew up hunting and fishing in the Alleghany area. Harold graduated from Covington High School in 1956. After attending Virginia Tech for one year, he and his high school sweetheart, Janice Wolfe, married in 1957. He graduated from The University of Richmond in 1961. Following two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Ga., Harold spent his thirty year career at Westvaco‘s Covington facility. Following his early retirement, he and Janice enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Janice Wolfe Vanness, in 2012, and his Brother Robert Stanley Vanness, who died in childhood. Harold Allen " Wimpy" Vanness, 78, of 441 E. Madison Street passed away on November 18, 2016, in Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital at Low Moor. Nellie Isabel Campbell Andrews, 84, of 304 Jonestown Road, died, Thursday, November 17, 2016 at her residence. She was born June 20, 1932 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Harv and Nellie Armentrout Campbell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Ernest Ivory Andrews in 1992; Siblings, Jane Pierce, Ralph, Teenie, Patsy, Ellen, Joe and Jimmy. Marion Neber Miller, 64, of 6807 Potts Creek Road, died Friday, November 11, 2016, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. She was born March 21, 1952, in Nuremberg, Germany, a daughter of the late Karl and Helmine Metsger Neber. Marion was the retired owner and operator of the former Miller'sBar and Grill in Low Moor and the former Marion's Caf in Covington. She was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church. Surviving are her Husband, Johnny M. Miller, of Covington; two Sons, Johnny D. Miller and his Wife, Samantha, of Charleston, SC, and Tim Miller of Covington; four foster children, Shawn Raby; Travis Raby; Christian Raby and Dontae Campbell, all of Covington; two grandsons, Cohen Miller and Hudson Miller, both of Charleston, SC; two sisters, Traudl Schuerlein and Gisela Neva both of Nuremberg, Germany, and several nieces and nephews. Barton Cammeron Stanley, 87, died Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at the Springs Nursing Home in Hot Springs. Mr. Stanley was born May 9, 1930, in Bath County a son of the late Frank and Catherine Shaffer Stanley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie Wolfe, Bessie Wolfe and Catherine Stanley and two brothers, Bill Stanley and George Stanley. He was a veteran of the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1033 in Covington and also Post #92 in Hot Springs. He was a retired logger, an avid outdoorsman, hunter and gardener and a loving father grandfather and great grandfather. Linda Walton Cauley, 71, of 330 W. Riverview Drive, died Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born June 17, 1945 in Clifton Forge, daughter of the late Leonard Arlington Walton and Lottie Ellen Dobbs Stone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Grover "Boob" Cauley, in 1993; an infant son; one sister, Lottie Sams and one brother Leonard Walton. Linda retired in 2001 as Seamstress with the Homestead with over 25years of service. She was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. Christine Mohr Jones, 68, died Sunday November 6, 2016, at the Brian Center Nursing Care in Low Moor. She was born February 6, 1948, in Chicago, IL, a daughter of Virginia Mohr Hanson of Chicago, IL. In addition to her mother she is survived by two daughters, Virginia Marie Jones and Christy Lynn Jones, both of Arizona; a sister,Beatrice Nagy of Chicago, IL and best friend, Marie De Guzman of Covington. Rose Ellen Rogers Young, 79, of 314 E. Phillip Street, died, Thursday, November 3, 2016 at The Golden Living Center in Clifton Forge. She was born February 8, 1937 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Hezry and Elizabeth Keyser Rogers. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter Betty Radar, a son Ronald Shue, Jr. , a sister Pauline DePriest, a brother, Donald Rogers. Mrs. Young was formerly employed at the Homestead. Surviving are her husband Robert Young of Covington; two sons, Troy Shue and his wife Wendy and Sheldon Shue, both of Covington; three grandchildren, Ryan Shue; Ethan Shue and Alex Shue all of Covington and one sister Francis May and her husband Berlin of Natural Well. Marie Wright Anderson, 88, of 100 Wet Ground Lane, died, Monday October 31, 2016 at her residence. She was born March 27, 1928 at Catawba, a daughter of the late Charles and Della Francisco Wright. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Anderson in 1997 and also by one brother and two sisters. George Washington Halsey, Sr., 91, of 213 E. Pine Street, died, Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. He was born April 18, 1925 in Covington, a son of the late Thomas and Marie Barnett Halsey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Marcus Halsey, in 2013 and also by ten brothers and sisters. Mr. Halsey served his country with the United States Army during World War II. He was the founder and operator of Halsey's Repair Shop from the mid 1960's until his retirement in 1991. Following his retirement, he continued to help his son in the shop on Lexington Street. Surviving are his wife of over 60 years, Virginia Crawford Halsey, of Covington; three sons, Rev. Walter Ferdinand Wright, 83, of 607 Wright Road died Saturday, October 29, 2016, at Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital. Mr. Wright was born May 12, 1933, in Alleghany County a son of the late Leslie and Margie Lee Wright. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Emmett Wright, Gordon Wright, Lonnie Wright, Glen Wright, Richter Wright, Denton Wright and Leonard Wright, and four sisters, Edna Sprague, Madeline Adler, Stella Mae Wright and Mary Ethel Wright. He was a veteran of the Korean War with the US Army. He retired in 1990 from Acadia Polymers, Inc. after 34 years with the company. Alfred Lee Helton, 82, of 121 S. Alleghany Ave., died, Friday October 28, 2016, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born July 17, 1934, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Robert D. and Mary Pollard Helton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Glendell Wallace Helton, in 2014; two brothers, Joseph Helton and Milton Helton and a sister, Fannie Wright. Mr. Helton Served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was an employee of the former Hercules, Inc. and retired from AET in the Shipping Department after over 40 years with the companies.
