John Robert Dunn, Jr., 76, of 2030 S. Stewart St. died Saturday, September 26, 2015, at his home. Mr. Dunn was born December 14, 1938, in Johnson City , TN, a son of the late John R. Dunn, Sr. and Mary Owens Dunn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two Brothers, Richard Dunn and Billy Dunn. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War with the U.S. Navy. He was an employee of the former Industrial Rayon Corp in Covington and had retired from AET, Inc.. He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. Surviving are his Daughter, Tonya Borchardt and Bert Harrochks, of Charlottesville ; his grandson, David Charles Borchardt, Jr., of Seattle, WA; his granddaughter, Brooke Taylor, of Norfolk; his Brother and Sister-in-law,Bobby and Wanda Dunn, of Alexandria and his Sister, Sylvia Spurlock, of Michigan. Sidney Marvin Small, 61, of Iron Gate, died Tuesday 16, 2015 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem. He was born May 6, 1954 in Chico, California, a son of the late Willard V. and Cora Elaine Norton Small. In addition to his parents, Mr. Small was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon Switzer Small and also by a brother. Mr. Small served his country in the United States Army. He was a computer programmer for LMI in .He was a member of the Wednesday night Bowling League; a Volunteer at Sharon Elementary School and was a member of Calvary Christian Church. Surviving are his wife, Tabitha Hicks Small of Iron Gate; 3 daughters, Amy Small of Iron Gate; Janice Montgomery and her husband Brandon of Salem; and Elizabeth Small of Iron Gate; one son, William Small; three grandchildren, Daemien Small of Iron Gate; Kayelynn Dickson and Carter Montgomery, both of Salem; three brothers and three sisters and several nieces and nephews. Alvie William "Pete" Thompson, 89, of 913 Dunbrack Rd., died, Monday, September 14, 2015 at his residence. He was born November 2, 1925 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Elmer Howard and Ida Mae Troxell Thompson. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by four brothers. Mr. Thompson repaired radios in his earlier years and later he worked for the late Buck Arritt repairing T.V.'s. Pete was employed by the former Industrial Rayon Corp. until it closed. When his grandson David went to college he became interested in computers. He worked part time repairing printers for MeadWestvaco. He helped his son Bill and grandchildren at Highland Computers for number of years. He enjoyed Go Cart Racing at the Callaghan track in the early 1960's. He was a Charter Member of Dunlap Rescue Squad and he was a man that loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Allen Russell Loan, Jr., 92, of 723 North Rockbridge Ave. died Sunday, September 13, 2015, in the Golden Living Center Nursing Home in Clifton Forge. Mr. Loan was born March 21, 1923, in Millboro a son of the late Allen R. Loan, Sr. and Carrie Neff Loan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Anne Hoover Loan in 2013, and also by two brothers. He was a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army. Mr. Loan was an employee of the former Industrial Rayon Corp in Covington and had retired in 1988 from the maintenance department of the former Hercules, Corp. Roger Lee Stanley, 69, of 235 E. Mallow Rd., died, Sunday September 13, 2015 at Lewis Gale Salem Medical Center. He was born December 17, 1945 in Marlinton, WV the son of the late Durard R. and Neva McMillion Bryant. Mr. Stanley was a retired pipe fitter for MeadWestvaco. He also served in the Army National Guard was an avid car enthusiast and golfer. Surviving are his wife of 24 years Anne Reyns Stanley of Covington, a son Ryan Lee Stanley of Canyon City, Colorado, a sister Vera Martin, a number of neices and nephews , two great nieces and several very dear friends. In keeping with his wishes his body has been cremated. Phyllis June Reynolds Ferrell, 82, of 6316 Hot Springs Rd., died, September 11, 2015 at the Brian Center in Low Moor. She was born on March 10, 1933 in Richmond, a daughter of the late Roy Franklin and Mary Reynolds Franklin. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son Edward Tinker Ferrell in 1985 and two brothers Roy H. Franklin and John Carl Franklin. Mrs. Ferrell was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church as well as a member of the Choir. She was an employee of the Jane Colby. Bishop Earl Preston Dudley left this earthly life to be with The Lord on Sunday, August 23, 2015. He passed away peacefully at the home he built with his own two hands, surrounded and embraced by his family. He was the patriarch and cornerstone to his loving family. He was a devout Christian and a selfless man, who dedicated himself to his family and all of those around him. Earl was born September 16, 1935 in Botetourt County, amidst the Great Depression. He was one of nine children born to parents of the late Charles William and Mary Catherine Dunbar Dudley. Unfortunately, his father died tragically during a railroad accident when Earl was on 10 years old. He learned very early in life the value of hard work as he had to help his young mother make ends meet. On August 16, 2015, Elizabeth Frances Jackson Gill went home to glory peacefully in the early morning hours in her home. She was born September 3, 1927 in Fairfield, VA, a daughter of the late Samuel and Annie Dickerson Jackson. Frances was known and loved by many. She was affectionately known by her friends and family as Jackie and her Roanoke friends called her Gill. Frances became a nurse at the age of 19 and she was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corp. during the Korean War. Frances loved nursing and taking care of people. She nursed for 61 years and did not completely retire from nursing until failing heath forced her do so at age 80. She was a wonderful daughter, mother and friend. She lived her life to please the Lord to whom she was fully committed.
