David Carl Thompson Sr., 50, of Covington, died Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem. Mr. Thompson was born October 11, 1969, in Alleghany County, the son of James Lawrence Thompson Jr. and Brenda Fridley Thompson of Covington. David was employed as a truck driver and in his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Most of all he enjoyed "hanging out" with his sons. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his four sons, David Thompson Jr., of Clifton Forge, Austin Thompson and Adam Thompson both of Covington, and Aaron Thompson of Low Moor, two grandchildren Grayson Thompson and Rowen Thompson; two brothers ,James Thompson, III of Summerville, SC, and Chris Thompson of Covington, a sister, Kimberly Thompson, of North Carolina, and a number of nieces and nephews. Nancy Scott Simmons, 77, of 616 Jonestown Rd., died Friday, January 31, 2020, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem. Mrs. Simmons was born May 4, 1942, in Alleghany County the daughter of the late Bret and Lula Reynolds Scott. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Scott. She retired from the H.O. Canfield Corporation and had attended First Christian Church. Charles Joseph "Charlie Joe" Sr. Deane, 89, of 1308 McAllister Drive died Friday, January 17, 2020, at Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor.
Mr. Deane was born April 27, 1930, in Alleghany County a son of the late Howard and Pearl Cooke Deane. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles J. Deane, Jr., in 2018 and also by two sisters, Martha Deane and Regina Boswell.
He was employed in the maintenance department at Dabney Lancaster Community College for 25 years. He was a member of the Virginia National Guard with 43 years of service, 20 years in which were full time Civil Service. Surviving are his Wife of 64 years, Margaret Owens Deane, of Covington; a Son and Daughter-in-law, John and Cheri Deane, of Reidsville, NC; a Daughter, Catherine Deane, of Bridgewater; three grandchildren, Charles J. Orren Vaughn Roberts, 92, of 800 Stratton St., died Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at the Brian Center Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Low Moor. Mr. Roberts was born October 15, 1927, in Confluence, PA, the son of the late Joseph Orren and Edith Phillips Roberts. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Gum Roberts, in 2015, a son in law, Jon Harouff in 1986, three sisters, Ruby Thompson, Maxine McCully, and Dora Leah Branham, and a brother Dale Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a retired general contractor who had constructed many beautiful homes in the Alleghany Highlands, prior to this he had worked at Hercules. He was a Charter Member of Mallow Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder and Deacon. He had been attending Temple Baptist Church of recent. Mrs. Campbell was born September 30, 1929, in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Raymond and Ada Persinger Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Osburn Campbell, in 2002; a Son, Gary Campbell, and a Daughter-in-law, Pamulla Campbell. Edward Frankie Lesher, 75, of 124 Hallies Drive died Tuesday, January 7, 2020. At Lewis Gale-Alleghany Hospital in LowMoor. Mr. Lesher was born December 9, 1944, in Raleigh County, West Virginia, a son of the late Lonzo Franklin Lesher and Alifair Webb Lesher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Ford Lesher, in 1998 and also by three brothers and two sisters. He had retired in 2007 from the Digester Room at MeadWestvaco after 45 years with the company. He was a former member and Governor of Covington Lodge #610, Loyal Order of Moose. Mrs. Morris was born November 5, 1936, in Alleghany County a daughter of the late William Mason and Edna Smith Bowles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters. She had retired from the Alleghany County School System at Mountain View Elementary School, but had spent 40 years at the former Central Elementary School. Barbara Fay Wiseman, 70, formerly of Scott Hill and the Woodlands, died, December 31, 2019 at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor. Mrs. Wiseman was born September 13, 1949 in Baltimore, MD the daughter of the late Ira Walters and Bess Venters Atkinson Wiseman. She worked as a laborer at Jackson River Enterprise and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While at Scott Hill she attended the Mr. Carmel Church and loved word searches, coloring books and Elvis and country music. Mr. Maynard was born May 17, 1926, in Inez, KY, a son of the late Monroe and Lola Bowen Maynard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Melva Webb Maynard; a son, Connard Dwight; a son-in-law, James "Harvey, Simmons; two sisters, Donne and Arwona; four brothers, Orvil, Carson, Hershel, and Lee.
Connard served his country in World War II as a quartermaster in the US Army. Following his service to his country, he worked for Robertson-Fowler Construction Co. for 30 years, helping complete many projects both locally and regionally, including building the road between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC, numerous stretches of I-64, I-81, and Gathright Dam. Before his retirement, he was the owner of Sunoco in Covington.
