Harrison Wayne Simmons, 76, of Roanoke, died, Thursday, March 29, 2018. He was born January 29, 1942 on Bens Run, in Covington, the son of the late Walter and Annie Tucker Simmons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emily H. Simmons; two brothers, Elmer B. Simmons and Homer "Ted" Simmons and a sister, Patty Watts. Wayne attend Boiling Spring High School in Alleghany County before moving to Roanoke in 1958 and attended Andrew Lewis High School in Salem. He received his GED in 1979. Before moving to Roanoke he was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church on Potts Creek. Mr. Simmons served in the Navy, Navy Reserves and Inactive Reserves from 1960-1966. Sergeant Simmons joined the Virginia National Guard in 1966 and was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard of Virginia and transferred to US Army Retired Reserves in 1989 as Staff Sergeant. Mary Cales Britt, 96, formerly of Covington, died Monday, March 26, 2018 at Commonwealth Senior Assisted Living in Abingdon. She was born January 3, 1922 in Alderson, WV, a daughter of the late Elbert and Margaret Warren Cales. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Leslie A. Britt 2014; a sister Francis Cales and an infant son. Mrs. Britt was a member of Calvary Christian Church and the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Ladies Auxiliary. Johnie Harold Carter, 90, of 4212 Dunlap Creek Rd, died, Saturday March 24, 2018 at his residence. He was born August 3, 1927 in Boomer, WV, the son of the late Simon and Mina Martin Carter. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a Brother Jack Carter Mr. Carter served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from Alleghany County School System after working as a Custodian at Callaghan Elementary School. He was member of Palestine Presbyterian Church, a charter member of Dunlap Fire Department and Rescue, a member of the former Crows Ruritan Club, as well as a member of the Moonshine Express Band, he was caller for Square Dancing and enjoyed Polka Dancing. Edith Clark Haynes, 92, of 1528 S. Howard St. died Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at Carrington Place Nursing Home in Daleville. Mrs. Haynes was born February 13, 1926, in Rockbridge County a daughter of the late Harvey and Piney Wilhelm Clark. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Sherman Clark, Ralph Clark, Lawrence Clark and Edward Clark; four sisters, Mildred Rowsey, Ethel Tyree, Francis Hostetter and Sharlotte Clark and a grandson, Bradley Haynes. She was an employee of the former Industrial Rayon Corp in Covington. Charles Leslie "Chick" Bowen, 75, of 5401 Big Ridge Road died Friday, March 16, 2018, at his home. Mr. Bowen was born February 7, 1943, in Alleghany County a son of the late Zella Louise Bowen. In addition to his Mother, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War with the U. S. Army. He had retired from the maintenance department of KIK International. Surviving are his life partner of 53 years, Sonja Taylor, of Covington; his Son, Charles L. Bowen, and his Wife, Billy, of Chesterfield; three grandchildren, Taylor Bowen, Sage Bowen and Sebastian Bowen all of Chesterfield and a number of nieces and nephews. Mildred Marie Taylor Carpenter, 98, of Covington, passed away Friday March 16, 2018, at the Brian Center Alleghany in Low Moor. She was born September 18, 1919, in Pocahontas County, West Virginia at Frost, the daughter of the late Robert D. Taylor and Thelma Carpenter Taylor McCarty. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Lawrence E. Carpenter, in 1988 and also by two daughters, Carol Ann Lipes and Frances Nicely. Mildred had many friends at the Brian Center who called her "Millie". She will be missed by her family and her cat, Patches. Ina Mae Poage Clonche, 58 of 314 E. Michigan Street, died, Wednesday March 14, 2018 at The Springs Nursing Center in Bath County after hard fought battle with cancer. She was born February 6, 1960 in Alleghany County, a daughter of Jeanette Graham Malashevich of Covington and the late James E. Poague. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by Ethan Dressler. In addition to her mother she is survived by her son, B.J. Dressler and his wife Carrie of Covington; her Fianc Mike Terry of Covington; two grandchildren, Skylar Dressler and Eli Dressler both of Covington; one brother, Ricky Poage of Covington; her step father, Robert Malashevich of Covington; her future Father in law, Clyde Terry of Covington. Ruth Putnam Altizer, of 2111 Evergreen Rd. died at the Brian Center in Low Moor on March 9, 2018. She was born October 16, 1936, in Covington, VA. She was the wife of the late Garland H. Altizer for 57 years until his death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles L. and Mamie Hocker Putnam, and her brother, Charles L. Putnam, Jr. She retired from Westvaco in 1995 as a keyboard operator after 36 years. She was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Covington High School in 1954, with a great number of graduates, which remained her closest and dearest friends after many years, especially Robbie Warlitner. She was a special loving "Gramie" who loved her grands and great grands. Her favorite hobbie was collecting special dollar bills, and birthday year coins for them. Kelly, Sr. and Betty Sampson Kelly. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant nephew Julian Neal Brinkley, Jr. and Cousin Christopher Persinger. Gary Allen Malone, 64, of Covington, died, Monday, March 5, 2018 at Sentara Rockingham Memorial Medical Center in Harrisonburg. Mr. Malone was born July 30, 1953 in Waynesboro, the son of the late William R. and Pearl Hite Malone. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his companion Ruby C. Cook, a sister Marion Evans. Gary was a purchasing agent of food and beverage for the Great Eastern Resort McGaheysville. He is survived by a daughter Stephanie Malone and her husband Andrew White of San Francisco, CA, two brothers Pat Malone of Covington and Sonny Malone of Roanoke, a sister Margarete Seaman of Keyser, WV and a number of nieces and nephews. Randall "Bun" Tingler, age 68, died peacefully at his home on March 2, 2018, surrounded by his family and friends. "Bun" was born on April 16, 1949, in Alleghany County, the son of the late Jesse and Bertha Tingler. In addition to his parents he ws preceded by a brother, Melivn "Monk" Tingler. He is survived by his sister, Betty Tingler Arthur; his daughters Ellen Tingler Fischer and Sara Tingler Hoke; his son-in-law, Jacob Hoke; grandsons Ryan and Cayden Fischer; Tanner and Teagan Hoke; and Sydney Fischer, the special little girl in his life whom he loved as his own, as well as several nieces and nephews. A prominent figure in the Highlands community, "Bun" served 33 years with the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department, retiring in 2003 as Captain. In addition, he volunteered with the Boiling Springs Fire & Rescue for 30 years, a lifelong commitment to the community he shared with his beloved wife, Sharon Linton Tingler, who preceded him in death.
