John Franklin Tingler, 30, of 308 Armentrout Road died Saturday, April 18, 2020, at his home. Mr. Tingler was born July 1, 1989, in Roanoke a Son of J. W. Tingler, Jr., of Covington and the late Karen Brennan Tingler. John was a 2007 graduate of Covington High School. He was employed as a small engine service writer at Covington Farm and Fuel in Covington. Surviving in addition to his father are his grandparents, James and Ann Tingler, of Covington; a cousin, Rachel Seymour, of Covington and a special friend, Morgan Sydenstricker of Covington. In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. In keeping with the guidelines of the current pandemic crisis, a private funeral service will be hold Sunday April 26, 2020, at the Tingler family property on Armentrout Road. Margaret Rice Talaga, 100, died, Saturday, April 18, 2020, at her home in Thaxton, VA. Mrs. Talaga was born November 20, 1919, in Amherst, VA, a daughter of the late George and Ethel Grant Rice. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, LadisLaus Stanley Talaga. She had worked at the former Silk Mill in Covington and became a hairdresser while living in Covington. She later moved to Roanoke where she was the owner and operator of Faith's Beauty Salon for over 25 years until her retirement at age 65. Surviving are her Daughter, Patricia Stanley, of Bedford; her Son, Jeff Talaga, and his Wife, Emily, of Kensington, MD; five grandsons, Matthew Talaga, Jason Talaga, Casey Talaga, Paul Graham and Kirk Graham; one great grandson, Corbin Graham and one great granddaughter, Ashley Graham. Vaughn Darryl Douglas, 59, of 129 Hallies Road died Friday, April 17, 2020, at his home. Mr. Douglas was born June 9, 1960, in Baltimore, MD, a son of the late Norman Lionel and Grace Bush Douglas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a Brother, Barry Douglas. He was employed as a truck driver for F. L. Moore & Sons, Inc. of Concord. He served in the Army National Guard and was a former member of the Covington Fire Department, Falling Spring Fire Department and Hot Springs Fire Department. She was born March 7, 1929 in Low Moor to the late Joseph Nelson Fridley and Hattie Virginia Painter Fridley Hellems, other than her parents she preceded in death by her infant son Earl Ray Clarkson, a half-sister Carrie Fridley Dawe, her brother Robert Nelson Fridley and other relatives A wonderful moral example to her children and others. Mrs. Lacks was born June 29, 1936, in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Hazel and Nellie Smith Persinger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Freddie Monroe Lacks, in 2008, one sister and five brothers. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Alice Carroll Jordan, 89, 706 Madison Avenue died Wednesday, April 8, 2020. Mrs. Jordan was born June 14, 1930, in Alleghany County a daughter of the late James Carroll and Catherine Harvey Carroll Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Oliver Jordan, Sr. in 1992, two Daughters, Maria Ellis and Brenda Jordan, and also by four brothers and one sister. She had retired from the U.S. Forest Service and was a longtime member and the Mother of Wrightsville Baptist Church where she was a member of the Willing Workers Club, the Kitchen Committee and the Adult Choir. Paul Wayne Lacks, 81, of 6310 Ogles Creek Road died Wednesday, April 8, 2020, at his home. Mr. Lacks was born September 24, 1938, in Alleghany County a son of the late Lindsay and Edith Morris Lacks. In addition to his parents,he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Lacks, Sr. and Lindsay Lacks, Jr.. Paul had served in the National Guard and had retired in 1998 as a mechanic from AET. He was an avid fan of the Virginia Cavaliers and had a special love for his family. Surviving are his Wife of 60 years, Phyllis Morris Lacks, of Covington; one Son, Nathan Lacks and his Wife, Missy, of Buchanan; one Daughter, Tammy Newhouse, and her Husband, David, of Nace; one grandson, Matt Jones of Nace and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. McDaniel was born November 9, 1924, in Buchanan a daughter of the late Matthew L. King and Amanda Sprouse King. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Roy M. McDaniel, her Sister, Beatrice Ogden and Brother-in-law, Ralph Ogden. Libby was a member of Mt Carmel United Methodist Church, Rebekah State Lodge of Virginia and a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Covington Post 1033, VFW. She was a former Girl Scout leader with Troop #4 at the former Rivermont School. She was employed for 16 years at the former Alleghany Apparel Sewing Plant in Covington and then worked for 17 years as a CNA at the Woodlands Nursing Home in Clifton Forge.
